Bank, Thrift & Credit Union Research

Bankrate's Snapshot service provides financial research information along with Bankrate's CAEL Rating covering the financial condition of over 22,000 Banks, Thrifts & Credit Unions nationwide.

Bankrate's CAEL Rating is a proprietary analysis of the financial categories: Capitalization, Asset Quality, Earnings and Liquidity (CAEL), for each financial institution. Using quarterly data from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Office of Thrift Supervision, and the National Credit Union Administration, Bankrate assigns a value to each of the CAEL categories and calculates a composite Bankrate CAEL Rating for each financial institution.

The Bankrate Snapshot provides powerful independent research for industry professionals, institutions, regulators, depositors, borrowers, creditors, those seeking to reduce counterparty risk and others needing information regarding financial profile, condition and soundness of banks, thrifts and credit unions.

Research Ratings
Independent analysis and rating of the financial condition for over 22,000 Banks, Thrifts & Credit Unions. Financial institutions receive a quarterly Bankrate CAEL Rating of One to Five based on the research data and analysis. The highest rating is one and the least desirable is five, indicating the financial soundness of the institution. Bankrate's CAEL Ratings; 1=Superior, 2=Sound, 3=Performing, 4=Below Average, 5=Weak.
Snapshot Analysis
Each institution's financial condition is analyzed and reported. An earnings analysis reviews profitability, component contributions to current year results, and prior year performance. Asset quality is examined focusing on non-performing asset levels, loss reserve coverage, category risk, and loan yield. Capital trends, adequacy, quality, and durability as well as liquidity and interest rate risk are analyzed. The report also summarizes organizational information and historical financial data. A separate financial summary section includes a balance sheet, and key ratio data. The analysis also includes early warning and predictive indicators.
Reports and Search
Standard reports include Ratings of Top 20 Banks by Asset Size, Top 20 CAEL rated institutions, Lowest 20 CAEL rated institutions. Pre-set Search routines can be used to identify institutions that fit the rating criteria of interest such as: Top rated CAEL 1 institutions, Weak CAEL 5 rated institutions, Ratings of Institutions in a particular State or City, Ratings for institutions of an Asset Size group or other peer comparison. Search by holding company as well as individual operating institution.
Snapshot Database
For a more in-depth look at institutions' financial data, a query tool allows user-specified criteria for list creation and data capture. This feature will be especially useful to the professional seeking specific institution profiles, comparison reviews and special target data analysis. Data is available in multiple formats including Excel and PDF.
